Ghouls and ghosts may not be the only ones out trick-or-treating this Halloween - police are warning parents that youth gangs may also be haunting the streets.
Inner Wellington has been increasingly plagued by gangs such as the Strathmore 44s and the Dark Syde, who are responsible for attacks, burglaries and violent robberies.
Inspector Paul Berry, of Wellington, said if children were confronted by gangs of youths tonight wanting their lollies or money, "don't be brave, hand it over if you have to, and try and remember as much as you can and tell an adult straight away and call the police".
Mr Berry said no extra police patrols would be out, but parents needed to be aware of potential dangers.
"It would be unwise for parents to let their children roam around in the dark and go into houses they are not familiar with."
Manukau Counties police spokeswoman Angeline Barlow said despite more gang violence in the area, they were not worried that children would face an increased risk.
"People have this perception that the streets are crawling with youth gangs ready to pounce on you. It's not quite like that."
Meanwhile, national youth aid co-ordinator Inspector Chris Graveson offered some general advice.
Younger children needed to be accompanied by an older, responsible person if out celebrating Halloween.
"It is a good idea not to go too far from home and stick to a familiar neighbourhood."
And children needed to be wary of dogs when entering someone's property .
"It is important to remember that not everyone celebrates Halloween and people do not have to open their doors when people come knocking."
There were also visibility issues as most Halloween garb was black.
"Children should stick to well-lit footpaths and be careful crossing roads."
