Vodafone says it was powerless to stop a hoax text "news alert" going to hundreds of customers last week claiming former All Black Jonah Lomu had died.
Lomu's former manager Phil Kingsley-Jones slammed the mock report, and questioned why Vodafone could not stop it.
A Vodafone spokesman told the Sunday News it had no involvement in the text.
He said hundreds of similar hoaxes were sent out daily and the company was unable to stop them.
