Wellington's Life Flight are impressed with the quick-thinking of a Castlepoint forestry crew, after a tumbling log crushed a man's leg yesterday morning.
The crew of four, who were in a difficult-to-reach location, phoned in GPS coordinates and spraypainted a large fluorescent 'H' in a clearing for the Westpac rescue helicopter to land on.
Crewman Colin Larsen said the crew had started basic first aid before the helicopter arrived.
"He had been swatted sideways, but he was conscious," said Mr Larsen. "They gave us a good description of the area. There's three or four logging operations, and it's quite difficult to get the right one. But they had it all sorted."
He said access by vehicle would have been impossible. "It's a bulldozer and four-wheel-drive area. They only called us."
