It will be a case of "take no prisoners" at the national Muay Thai championships to be held at the Masterton Young Citizen's Club tomorrow.
Not only will a wide range of New Zealand titles be at stake but the winners of each division will earn themselves selection in the Kiwi line-up to contest the world Muay Thai championships in Thailand from November 27 to December 5.
Several Wairarapa fighters are expected to feature prominently throughout the 21-bout programme which will get under way at 2pm.
Billy Davis, of Masterton, will come up against Willie Lamb, of Auckland, in what should be a cracker of a straight final in the men's A division under-86kg section. Both men are highly-skilled exponents of a discipline which allows use of the knees and elbows as well as kicks and punches.
In fact, almost any part of the body is considered a fair target and any part of the body, except the head, may be used to strike an opponent, which tells why Muay Thai is often touted as the ultimate in hand-to-hand fighting.
The B division super heavyweight class will see George Murray, of Featherston, make his debut in senior ranks while Kirk Davis, of Featherston, will take on Fred Paul, of Auckland, in a straight final for the junior men's under-60kg title. They are both busy fighters who will keep what should be a big crowd of spectators well entertained.
There are four competitors in the B division under 75kg class, including two from the Wairarapa, Cody Temuri, of Masterton, and Jade Ngapera, of Featherston.
