Live stream: Future of Auckland transport debated

About 650 people with an interest in Auckland transport are gathering at the Aotea Centre in Auckland for a debate this evening.

The debate will discuss proposals for transport in a 10-year budget, including options for motorway tolls and a mix of a regional fuel tax and higher rates to pay for a $10.3 billion "Auckland Plan" budget.

Without these new funding options, the Auckland Council will only be able to afford a $6.9 billion "basic" option.

Speakers tonight include Mayor Len Brown, Generation Zero Auckland director Dr Sudhvir Singh and Transport Blog editor Patrick Reynolds.

There are no road lobbyists taking part at the meeting, drawing criticism by right-wing councillors that the meeting is a "gabfest for leftists".
