Plumes of ash and steam rose from White Island in a small eruption this morning.
The eruption at the volcano off the coast of the Bay of Plenty lasted for about 10 minutes from 10:23am.
GNS Science volcanologist Craig Miller says the eruption could be part of a sequence "ramping up" to a larger volcanic event on the island.
