Labour Party president Andrew Little has confirmed he is seeking to contest the New Plymouth seat at next year's elections.
Mr Little, who is also national secretary of the Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union, was expected to formally seek the nomination for the electorate from his party today.
If he was successful in New Plymouth he will stand down from his union role, and he will also stand down from his presidency role before the election, the Taranaki Daily News reported.
Mr Little was born and raised in Taranaki but hasn't lived there since the 1980s.
The New Plymouth seat was narrowly won at the last election by National's Jonathan Young.
