KEY POINTS:
Seawater continues to be pumped into a ship which is listing off the coast of Nelson.
The Taharoa Express, a bulk ironsand carrier which runs between New Zealand and China and Japan, got into trouble about 2.30am on Friday after its cargo shifted in rough seas off the Taranaki coast.
It managed to limp to the sheltered waters of Tasman Bay, at its worst moments listing by 20 degrees.
Maritime NZ spokeswoman Christl MacMillan said today seawater was being pumped up the ship's sides into internal tanks, and the list had been reduced to 18 degrees yesterday.
The "huge operation" to right it was still under way, with two more pumps arriving today, she said.
The 275m, 140,000 tonne vessel and its crew of 25 would not be moved until the weather improved and MNZ was satisfied the ship was safe.
The weather-related incident is not being treated as an accident but the Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) will investigate how it happened.
