Prime Minister John Key seems to have shot down a report that a listening device was discovered in a minister's home -- although it's difficult to say because, of course, he never comments on security matters.

The Sunday Star Times reported Government Communications Security Bureau (GCSB) agents carried out a sweep for bugs following fears devices had been planted ahead of the November election, and sources said at least one was found.

Mr Key, who is the minister in charge of the GCSB and the only one who can say anything about what it does, was questioned about this at his post-cabinet press conference today.

"All I can tell you is that I don't comment on security issues," he replied.

"I don't believe everything I read in the Sunday Star Times either."
