Liquor ban at Queenstown winter festival

Winter Festival party-goers have been slapped with a booze ban by Queenstown Lakes District Council.

The council voted at its monthly meeting in Wanaka today to ban liquor from central Queenstown during the festival.

The ban arose from claims underage drinkers had easy access to alcohol during the festival, which had led to drunkenness and truancy.

The council agreed to a review of the ban six months after the festival to see if it made a difference.
