An airline pilot is one of six New Zealanders looking at ordering the special lightweight version of the Mini Cooper S, priced at £22,000 ($56,417), from Britain.
The new limited-edition model, powered by a high-performance John Cooper Works GP kit, is being built in Britain and will be launched in July.
Only 2000 are being made, with 444 destined for sale in Britain.
Mini says almost 1500 were ordered six months ahead of launch and before the production model was even seen.
It is keeping performance figures under wraps until closer to the launch but it is understood the most powerful and lightest Mini yet will develop around 165kW (220bhp). It is said to weigh around 40kg less than the standard Mini Cooper S.
The two-seater will have JCW 18in (46cm) alloy wheels, dynamic stability control, multi-function steering wheel, air-conditioning and Recaro sports seats.
Mini says the options alone would add about $26,000 to the price of a standard Cooper S.
