Lightning strikes in Wairarapa on Wednesday night caused power blackouts.
Power was cut between Masterton and Carterton where a 33KV line was downed.
Powerco's operation manager Ross Dixon said the incident became a serious safety issue because the line was on the ground. Lines workers had to cut off several supplies around the district so repairs could be made.
This resulted in Clareville, Carterton and out to Gladstone being affected for nearly three hours, affecting 4000 electricity customers.
