Josh Townsend spent three hours tracking a lightning storm to take this photograph at New Brighton Pier in Christchurch. The image, taken last November, won the 17-year-old Christchurch Boys High student first prize in the science section of the first New Zealand secondary school agriculture and science photography competition. It has "no distractions from the subject", said judges Patrick Reynolds and David Cook. The AgResearch competition attracted 400 entries.
