Repeated lightning strikes have illuminated the Auckland sky tonight as a cluster of thunderstorms storm pass through the city.
An "unstable" weather system was responsible for the storms, and Aucklanders could also expect continued heavy rain and potential hail, said Met Service duty forecaster Ian Gall.
"It's an unstable weather system coming through and it's throwing these bands of heavy showers and a few thunderstorms at us with some regularity," he said.
Bright lightning strikes were a talking point across the city, with social media users quickly documenting their storm watching.
"Watching an amazing lightening show from the top of one tree hill," said Charlotte Smith on Twitter.
Mike Lawrence said: "Massive show of lightening here in South Auckland. Very impressive!
"The lightening out west is literally covering the sky," said Amy.
Mr Gall said similar weather should be felt across the western North Island.
"There's going the be the odd band of heavy thunderstorms coming in through now and into tomorrow as well."
