A chemical smell which led to the evacuation of about 20 to 30 fire and police communications staff from their Wellington headquarters yesterday was caused by an electrical fault in the lift.
Staff working at the sixth floor of Wellington Police Station and above were evacuated for several hours after
the smell was detected yesterday morning.
Emergency 111 calls were diverted to other centres during the evacuation.
The fault in the lift had been fixed and the "electrical" smell had gone, a police central communications spokesman said.
