A young boy was rescued at Riversdale Beach yesterday morning after being swept out into deep waters by a strong current.
Mike Taylor, Riversdale Surf Lifesaving Club captain, said the boy, aged between 8 and 10, lost his his footing on a steep incline. He was then caught in a current which carried him in to deeper water.
His mother had not realised he was in distress, Mr Taylor said.
A regional lifeguard who was on duty and rescued the boy said he had quickly put his hand up, which was crucial.
"We saw him almost immediately and we basically got out to him quickly because he put his arm up in the air right away to indicate he was in trouble," he said. "We prevented anything getting out of hand."
