Two men found guilty yesterday of murdering James John Bamborough six years ago, Leighton Brian Wilding, 38, of Upper Hutt, and Hayden Brent McKenzie, 28, of Westport, have been sentenced to life in prison.
The men strangled Mr Bamborough and held his head under the Buller River before taking the body to Denniston, 30km north of Westport, where it was buried.
The body was not recovered until September 2004 when McKenzie led police to it. Both blamed each other for the killing.
