Police investigating the murder of Chris and Cru Kahui say they are confident of making an arrest although a close-knit group of family members are still "hiding behind a web of lies and deception".
Other family members have maintained the head injuries and broken bones suffered by the 3-month-old babies were an accident. It has been almost three months since the twins were killed by a blow to their heads, or from their heads hitting a solid object with force applied.
The babies also had older rib fractures and one had a broken thigh bone.
Counties Manukau police yesterday said significant progress was being made in the double-murder investigation but indicated there was still weeks of work ahead.
Inquiry head Detective Senior Sergeant John Tims said the group - fewer than six people - would not provide further statements to police.
"There is still a close-knit group that are still hiding behind a web of lies and deception which, of course, is unhelpful to the investigation."
Mr Tims would not identify the people but said they were among those who had been in the family home with the babies before they died.
"They're just being difficult and it's not helpful to us. But having said that we are making progress."
He was confident of an arrest "in the near future".
"I can't really put a time frame on it."
Lies and deception slowing Kahui investigation, say police
