Much of Rodney Hide's political career has been in pursuit of Liberty. At 4.13pm on Friday, she arrived.
Liberty Louise Hide might not have been exactly the type of liberty he began his career looking for.
But the Act Party leader and his wife Louise were delighted with the 3.8kg girl who arrived 11 days after her due date.
"She is wonderful," said Louise. "So placid." Rodney chipped in: "Just like her dad."
And the name? "It's a great name, it's a great value. Nice and strong," said Rodney.
First order of business after Liberty's arrival was salmon and avocado sushi for Louise. And then they settled in for the rest of their lives.
It seems reasonable to ask if Dad, at age 54, might quit politics and stay home.
"I'm more determined than ever, in a funny way," he said. "The country's broke and it needs fixing.
"In a way Liberty has given me a new determination and a new rationale. You want a future for all the kids. You do wonder what the country is going to be like for Liberty when she grows up."
Rodney said it placed a fresh responsibility on him to be the best parent he could. "It's made me realise it's the biggest thing you do."
He has been changing nappies and as a second-time dad was able to show first-time mum Louise how to put one on Liberty.
Zach, Hide's son from a previous relationship, visited his new sister on Friday night.
