People who fled are a small minority
Your correspondent (Letters, September 5) mentions the "large number" of Aucklanders who left Auckland when level 4 was coming. The best guesses of numbers who left are several thousand. That would be a "large number" if the total Auckland population was around 30,000 or
40,000. There are over a million of us and we despise the few departing rats as much as you do.
Service to all of Aotearoa, to our community, to our whānau is at the forefront of our minds. As well as looking after ourselves. Can you guarantee no one from Whangārei would leave in the same situation?

Major choice
National Party leader Judith Collins blithely announced that 70-75 per cent vaccination is her party's goal to start reopening. She refused to answer Jack Tame's question "what was an acceptable death rate".
Shouldn't we be debating this "choice"? Age, BMI, occupation, ethnicity, family and friends all affect this. So too do politicians who are choosing for their people.
I'm dreaming of a Covid-free Christmas — sounds too good to be true but ScoMo preaches it.

Mall terrorist
From the Prime Minister's remarks it is very evident that the Government knew the weakness in the current terror law but were not prepared to do a lot to improve it. The question is how did the attacker get approval to live permanently in New Zealand and why did the Government not introduce new legislation to deport someone with these hardline views? Labour has an absolute majority and can introduce laws that should stop innocent lives being lost and prevent further lone wolf attacks.

New stadium
What exciting football last Sunday for New Zealand. Three Warriors players sent of for 10 minutes in their huge 44-0 loss to the Titans. This was followed immediately by the All Blacks-Wallabies game where Jodie Barrett was sent off for 20 minutes for an accidental kick to the head when leaping for the ball. But boy I wish Auckland had a marvellous stadium for football exactly like the amazing Perth Optus Stadium. It could easily be built on Avondale Race Course, which is no longer used. Please do it as we need it.
