KEY POINTS:
A man who made $500 from a chain letter is telling others not to bother. John Burgoyne-Thomas of Te Awamutu received a letter, supposedly from a Kevin Day, in November last year.
In the letter, Day said he had lost his job and had his house and car repossessed before he came across a chain letter saying he could make up to $70,000 in 60 days. He claimed he sent a copy of the letter to 200 people and sent $10 to the person at the top of a list of five.
"To date I have made over $800,000," the letter said.
Burgoyne-Thomas said he sent 200 letters to people across the North Island last November. He got $500 within three months but the effort wasn't worth it.
"I wouldn't do it again ...
I have had phone calls from people I sent the letter to and I have told them not to go ahead. It's not the big thing it's made out to be and they will be disappointed."
The Ministry of Consumer Affairs and Commerce Commission had received numerous complaints about the letter and warned people not to get involved.
