Bradley Legge was the star performer for a four-strong Featherston club team which attended the New Zealand wrestling championships in Auckland.
Competing in the under-100kg class for boys aged 14yrs to 16yrs, Legge took out the gold medal to add to that he had won at the North island championships earlier in the season.
Also contesting the 14 to 16yrs age group but in the under-54kg class were Adam Saunders and Dylan Chatfield.
Saunders won all his pool round fights along with his semi-final.He than came up against a very experienced South Island fighter in the decider and despite showing plenty of courage and skill he had to settle for the silver medal.
Chatfield also won all three of his pool bouts but unfortunately could not wrestle off in the medal round due to a shoulder injury suffered in his last pool fight. Teina Hullena was the sole Featherston entrant in the under 63kg division for wrestlers aged 14yrs to 16yrs. He drew the eventual winner of his grade in his pool bouts and his unfortunate loss meant he did not advance to the medal rounds
But for one technical blunder Hullena might well have won that bout. Featherston official Wayne Thurston officiated in an umpiring role at the championships as well as organising the trip for the Featherston contingent, all of whom benefit immensely from the coaching of former national champion Grant Parker.
