Whareama is the place to be on Sunday.
A festive atmosphere is guaranteed as the East Coast Rugby Club host a charity day, the feature of which will be a rugby match between a Parliamentarians XV and the legendary East Coast Wrinklies.
No fewer than eight politicians are listed in the Parliamentary XV & captain Chris Tremain, John Hayes, Kelvin Davis, Te Ururoa Flavell, Aaron Gilmore and three who are past or present Ministers of the Crown, John Carter, Damien O'Connor and Shane Jones.
But even they could well be upstaged by their "celebrity" players, among whom are motorcycle ace Aaron Slight and former All Blacks Stu Wilson, Bernie Fraser and Junior Tonu'u.
East Coast Wrinklies captain Dave Watt says his side will not in the least be deterred by the supposed quality of their opposition.
Watt reckons his boys have benefited immensely from a prolonged course of carbohydrate bulking and are consequently in peak physical and mental condition. What's more, they were determined to prove the worth of their motto "the older we get the better we were".
Which means with an average age of 53 in the backs they have plenty of good times to look back on!
The feature game kicks off at 1.30pm and will be preceded by matches between the Wairarapa Barbarians and Kuranui College women's teams and the East Coast and Masterton Rams under-13s. Their games get under way at noon. And once the rugby is complete the entertainment continues with an auction, the proceeds of which will go to the Riversdale Beach Surf Club and the Tinui Anzac Trust.
Among items on offer there are a bottle of whisky signed by Prime Minister John Key, two tickets for the award-winning Tora walk, fishing charters, garden furniture, wine, holiday accommodation and rugby memorabilia from former All Blacks Sir Colin Meads and Mark Donaldson.
