A Waikato murderer has been granted permission to use legal aid to appeal both his conviction and his sentence.
Todd Marteley was sentenced in 2010 to life imprisonment with a minimum non-parole period of 14 years, for murdering Piki Kingi.
Marteley is accused of instigating the brutal killing over a soured drug deal.
Three others were also jailed for their part in the murder, which involved the use of a cricket bat and a tomohawk on the victim.
Marteley was initially granted legal aid to appeal his sentence, but not for an appeal for his conviction.
