The greatest improvement in Subaru's hot new Legacy B4 sedan and GTB wagon models is a single turbo. The new-generation model has eschewed the twin-turbo setup of previous models in favour of a single twin-scroll titanium unit. It's claimed to provide quicker response and smoother power. The figures are certainly impressive - the new car's peak torque of 343Nm is now achieved at a mere 2400rpm, compared with the current car's 5000rpm. Power stays at 206kW.
Other engine changes include an active valve control system, new exhaust system with equal-length pipes and a drive-by-wire electronic throttle.
Kiwi buyers won't have to wait long to try the new car for themselves. The constant threat of used imports means that Subaru New Zealand has taken extreme measures to introduce the B4 here as early as July, more than three months ahead of the rest of the range.
"This is a unique and demanding market," says Subaru New Zealand boss Wallis Dumper. "Subaru Japan has co-operated by making early production available to head off attempts by secondhand importers."
Manual-gearbox models will come first, but when the rest of the range ramps up in October the B4/GTB will be also be available with a five-speed automatic sports shift transmission.
New Legacy is slightly larger than the current car - 20mm up in wheelbase and 35mm wider. But while the sedan has grown 25mm higher, the ever-sporty wagon is now 10mm lower.
A wider track and lower mountings for the motor should further improve the car's handling. Eighteen-inch alloy wheels are standard.
Inside, the car features luminescent instruments with soft red backlighting, dual-stage twin airbags and active front head restraints to prevent whiplash in rear-end collisions.
The GTB wagon has a one-touch folding switch that automatically folds forward the rear-seat backrests, while an electromagnetic switch repositions the seats.
The cargo area cover can now be stored under the floor while luggage hooks, a luggage hanger and side cargo nets are part of the package.
Prices will be announced when the car is launched next month.
