Saturday saw the men playing the qualifying round for the Walker Fourball competition, and as usual there were some very good scores as well as some not so good.
The best score in the qualifying was returned by the lefties Robin Britt and Wayne Evans with a 59 nett. That score was largely set up by Robin Britt's nett 62. The runners up were the pairings of Fred Brittain and Kevin Gibbs and Allan and Matthew Biel on 61 nett, with Chic Reiri and Graeme Dick next best on 62 nett.
In the medal competition, Matthew Biel led the way in the lower handicap group on 68 nett, followed by Shane Stewart on 70, Haira Paku on 71, Darryl Coley on 72 and Anton Coltham on 73.
But the best score on the day was Robin Britt's 62 nett, giving him top spot in the second group, with a comfortable gap back to Fred Brittain in second place on 68 nett, with Doug Leach on 69, Allan Biel on 71, while Ken Bellass got the nod of those players on 72 nett for the last place in the prize list.
The nearest to the pin prizes were well spread around, with Thomas Tiopira taking out the Solway Pie Shop one on the first hole, Ngaire Graham the Mitre 10 one on the third and the McAuleys Transport one on the sixth hole. Bryan Dick won the Solway Butchery one on the eighth whole, Noeline Stevenson the Alister Bruce Builders one on the tenth hole, and John Pitau the Social Committee one on the seventeenth.
Holes in two were scored by Ian Race, Robin Britt, Graeme Dick, Doug Leach and John Pitau.
Sunday's competition was a stableford round, but it was a smaller than usual field that played. The leading score was the 42 point haul from Kevin Gibbs, with Laurence Butler one point adrift in second place. Anita Karaitiana was third on 40 points, with Kip Edmonds fourth on 39, with a gap back to John Pitau, Ken Bellass and Ron Hutcheson all on 36 points. Bryan Dick scored the only hole in two on the day.
Tuesday's doubtful weather kept a number of regulars away from the veteran's stableford competition on Tuesday. Yvonne Allsworth was the best of the ladies on 32 points, with Daphne Jordan and Janet Shaw both finishing on 31 points. Bruce Wilson was the best of the men on 35 points, with Ron Hutcheson second on 32 and Fred Brittain rounding out the prizes on 31 points.
Mei Hakaraia took the ladies nearest to the pin on the third hole, but none of the ladies was able to make the sixth green in one. Ray Loader took out the men's nearest to the pin on the sixth hole and Fred Brittain the one on the seventh.
Next Tuesday, the veterans will be playing in another stableford round.
This coming week-end, being a long one, will be a bit quiet on the club scene. Saturday has the competition of the day being a stableford round, while the course will be closed on Sunday for the Fulton Hogan North Island Golf Tournament.
The club will be open again for the members on Monday, when the competition is a bisque par round.
