Commonwealth Games silver medallist Tamsyn Leevey should be the star act at the Nga Hau e Wha national Maori squash tournament to be played at the Masterton and Red Star clubs over Labour weekend.
Leevey and Shelley Kitchen combined at the 2006 Games to be runners-up in the doubles and they also tasted success at the world championships.
She will contest both the women's open and the doubles events over the next three days.
A former Masterton player and regular Wellington representative Willie Bicknell is expected to feature prominently amongst the men, along with another Wellington-based player in Reece Williams. Both are A graded players.
Entries for this weekend have been received from all over the North Island with a handful from the South Island and Australia as well. It is expected they will number around 150 in total.
Play was scheduled to get under way at 3pm today with the finals expected to start about 3pm on Sunday.
There will be five grades in operation & open, masters, social , junior and doubles.
Another highlight of the weekend will be the conducting a coaching clinic for junior players at Red Star courts between 11am and 1pm tomorrow by Squash New Zealand high performance coach Nick Mita, nowadays living in Wellington but a former noted Wairarapa sportsman who starred here at rugby and basketball as well as squash.
Participants in all activities were welcomed at a powhiri at Te Ore Ore Marae this afternoon and there will be an official farewell on Monday morning.
