Lecretia Seales to be laid to rest today

Lecretia Seales was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer four years ago.

Lecretia Seales, the Wellington laywer who renewed debate around euthanasia with her landmark 'right to die case', will be farewelled by friends and family today.

The funeral for Ms Seales will be held at Old St Paul's on Mulgrave Street in Thorndon, Wellington at 2pm.

A senior legal and policy adviser at the Law Commission, Lecretia Seales was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer in 2011. As her health deteriorated, she filed a statement of claim in the High Court seeking a ruling to determine whether her GP could lawfully administer a lethal dose of drugs to end her life at the time of her choosing.

Ms Seale's aggressive brain tumour caused gradual paralysis and she lost her eyesight on the left side of her body and the ability to move her hand, arm and leg.

She was often too sick to watch her case unfold in the High Court.

Ms Seales died on June 5, just hours after a judgement was made in the case. Justice David Collins ruled that a doctor could not assist her to end her life without the risk of prosecution

Family spokeswoman Cate Brett said the case had sparked a "national conversation which has reverberated around the world".
