Greytown's avenue of lime trees in Soldiers Memorial Park are shedding their leaves, a fitting reminder that Anzac Day is on Friday.
The trees were planted in the early 1920s in memory of soldiers from the town who were killed in World War 1 and this year the falling leaves seem to have a special poignancy with August marking 100 years since the outbreak of the "war to end all wars".
They are part of the original 117 exotic trees planted around the edge of the park.
Greytown Community Heritage Trust has a plaque at the start of the avenue telling the history of the trees.
A fundraising campaign was launched in 1952 to build the town's swimming baths as a memorial to Greytown soldiers who died in World War II.
