Among the fallen service personnel the Navy will remember today will be 28 sailors killed on the HMNZS Leander in World War II.
A Japanese torpedo hit the Leander at the battle of Kolombangara on July 11 and 12, 1943.
Many of those killed were trapped in Leander's boiler room until the ship's return to Devonport months later, the Navy said yesterday.
A grave at the Waikumete Cemetery in Auckland, marked "Unknown Leander", holds the remains.
A Navy ceremony will be held today at the graveside.
