KEY POINTS:
Around $22,000 literally went down the tube when an Auckland petrol station holding tank sprung a leak, draining approximately 14,000 litres of petrol into the ground.
The leak at the as-yet unopened Pak'n'Save supermarket petrol station in Mangere on Wednesday was believed to have been caused by a contractor who accidentally pierced one of the pipes, said Foodstuffs Auckland property development manager Murray Jordan.
Auckland Regional Council staff assessed the area and were satisfied the leak had been contained to a localised area and posed no risk to people.
Mr Jordan said the petrol had been placed in the newly constructed tanks to test them. The tanks had a total capacity of 100,000 litres.
