KEY POINTS:
Last year drivers spent a total of £114.6 million ($NZ300 million) paying off speeding fines, according to a survey commissioned by cartographer Philip's.
That's a one percent monetary increase over 2005, despite fewer speeding tickets being issued.
The anomaly occurs because fewer fines are being successfully contested in court.
There was also a disparity between regions - Surrey, for example, only managed to collect fines for 47 percent of the tickets it issued.
The most money - £9.45 million - was collected in Greater London, working out at £1.26 per resident over the year.
But the greatest per person amount was in North Wales, where fines average out at £5.82 per head.
