KEY POINTS:
The Auckland lawyer who brokered the return of the Waiouru war medals was getting a hard time from talkback radio callers - until "Dean" went on air to offer his support.
But "Dean" was in fact an alias, used by a lawyer from the same chambers as Chris Comeskey.
Yesterday, Calvin Wooten admitted calling Newstalk ZB under an assumed name, after a fellow lawyer recognised his voice on air.
He denied "singing the praises" of his colleague, saying he just wanted to put the record straight.
"I heard some disparaging remarks about a colleague of mine and wanted to add my two cents' worth, but remain anonymous.
"As far as the medals are concerned, I just wanted to mention that there was no one else who could have returned the medals but a criminal defence lawyer because of the ethical obligations that he has and because of the confidence that might give criminals who might wish to come clean."
He said he had phoned talk-back stations in the past, using the name "Dean", which is his middle name.
