Wanganui Mayor Michael Laws is offering $500 from his own pocket to anyone who can identify the "mindless morons" who tagged the city's library.
The Alexander Heritage and Research Library on Queens Park was hit at the weekend, and Mr Laws said the damage would cost thousands of dollars to repair.
The act was an example of the "mindless morons who seek to despoil our city with their illiterate scribble".
"The perpetrators are obviously losers and want to proclaim their worthlessness publicly," he told the Dominion Post.
Anyone who helped identify the offenders would be "$500 in cash better off", Mr Laws said.
