Wanganui Mayor Michael Laws appears before a council committee today for a code of conduct hearing.
Several Wanganui residents have complained about comments the mayor has made about individuals and organisations in his weekly newspaper column, and the way those comments have reflected on the town.
Dr Rob Moodie, who is representing the complainants, said many residents were upset by the ridicule and contempt.
"My clients find it totally unacceptable for the first citizen of Wanganui to be describing people in the terms that Mr Laws consistently does," he said.
