Snow is continuing to fall in the South Island as thunderstorms batter much of the North Island.
MetService says a cold front should move across the North Island today bringing heavy rain to central North Island areas.
Several roads around the South Island remain closed, however snowfall on alpine roads is forecast to clear this afternoon.
WeatherWatch.co.nz reports there have been more than 8,800 lightning strike around the country today.
