The latest in a string of fatal accidents on Hawke's Bay roads has prompted police to speak out.
A man died this morning after his car smashed into a ditch south of Hastings.
Area Commander Inspector Dean Clifford said it was the third crash in three days and brings the district's death toll for the year to 38.
He said police and local and roading authorities held a meeting this week to discuss the issue.
Mr Clifford said police can work on enforcement and the authorities can work on the roads, but in the end it comes down to driver responsibility.
There has been no single factor behind all the crashes but speed, alcohol and fatigue have all played a part and he said people have to be aware of their capabilities, and drive to the conditions.
