KEY POINTS:
A large slip that came down overnight closed State Highway Six in the lower Buller Gorge between Inangahua Junction and Westport, earlier this morning.
Police put diversions in place while Transit contractors worked on reopening the road.
Transit operations manager Peter Connors said the road was reopened at about 10.15am this morning.
He said contractors wanted to wait until it got light to start working on the slip.
"Once daylight came, it didn't take too long to get a track around it," Mr Connors said.
He said the South Island has had a lot of rain and snow and chains are necessary for some of the passes.
