A large scrub fire in the Cashmere Hills above Christchurch could be seen clearly from the city overnight.
Firefighters were called to the blaze on Summit Rd shortly before midnight last night.
The fire was thought to have started in a car before spreading to scrub in the hills.
Southern fire communications shift manager Riwai Grace said six tankers had to be called in from across the region to battle the fire, which grew to 3000sq m at its height.
He said the fire could be seen clearly from the city.
