Large quake rocks Gisborne

A relatively large earthquake struck off the coast of the North Island's East Coast overnight.

The quake, which measured 5.5 in magnitude, hit at 11pm, GNS Science said.

It was centred 1430km northeast of Gisborne and was 7km deep.
