Firefighters are battling a large fire in a shed filled with wood near Levin this morning.
Fire Service Central Communications shift manager Murray Dunbar said the fire was well alight when crews arrived at the former Kohitere Boys' Home complex around 3.30am.
The shed is full of wood, which is making the fire harder to extinguish, he said.
At the height of the blaze seven appliances from Levin, Otaki, Palmerston North and Waitarere Beach were at the scene, Mr Dunbar said, with around 30 firefighters.
There are still three fire service appliances fighting the fire, as well as a couple of rural fire units from Levin, who are extinguishing any scrub fires that ignite.
