Parts of the Waikato will lose power for several hours today as large bird nests perched on towers supplying power to the region are removed.
Transpower is taking urgent action to avoid future power cuts and cutting electricity between 10.30am and 2.30pm to remove the nests.
In a Facebook post to residents the electricity supply company says the birds have created large nests on the transmission line and towers that feed power to Tirau, Matamata and Hinuera townships and surrounding areas.
The nests were already affecting the power supply which meant they needed to be urgently taken down.
Transpower said if they didn't it threatened to cause a much large problem on the power network plunging many areas into blackout for longer periods.
