A video of a man stealing a laptop computer posted on YouTube and Google video has resulted in a man being convicted for the theft.
The video showed a man walking past a computer shop and then going into the store.
He walked around the shop for some time before closing the lid on a laptop and walking away from it.
He then walked back to the laptop and put it under his coat before leaving the shop.
Dawson Anthony Bliss, 50, of Hastings, was convicted in Greymouth District Court yesterday after pleading not guilty to a charge of theft.
The court was told about the video of the theft from a window display being posted on YouTube.
It recorded more than 500,000 hits, one of them from a man who recognised the thief as Bliss.
Judge Gary MacAskill fined Bliss $2000 and ordered him to pay $1990 reparation.
