Flight Centre Lansdowne recovered from a narrow first innings deficit to beat Greytown outright by nine wickets in their Bidwell Cup senior men's inter-club cricket match which finished at Rathkeale College on Saturday.
Chasing Greytown's first innings total of 179, of which all-rounder Seth Rance made 109 (14 fours and one six), Lansdowne was all out for 170 with the feature of their batting effort being that only two players reached double figures. Sam Curtis made 73 (nine fours) and Robin James 64 (eight fours). They came to the wicket with their team tottering at 27-4 and were together while 105 very valuable runs were scored.
Bowling for Greytown Rance continued his huge influence on the game by taking 8-36 from 19.3 overs while Brian James took 2-50 from 15 overs.
Batting a second time Greytown were all at sea against the medium pace bowling of Lansdowne's Mark Scully and were dismissed for a paltry 77. Duncan Didsbury hit three fours in his 30 and the next highest scorer was N.Patel on 10.
Scully bowled 12 overs and finished with the impressive figures of 6-28 and he was well supported by Robin James who took 3-28.
Left 88 runs to get for the outright win Lansdowne lost one early wicket but James Adamson and Simon Butler saw them to victory, Adamson 's 51 not out included five fours and Butler hit three fours and one six in his 37 not out. Rance took the only wicket to fall for Greytown at a cost of 16 runs.
The other Bidwell Cup match between Red Star and Wairarapa College at Wairarapa College was evenly poised at the end of the first day's play.
Red Star found the going tough when they batted first on a slow pitch and were all out for 145. Daniel Stoneley (49) and Joe Hull (26) were the only batsmen to get amongst the runs.
Medium pacer Sean Jarvis did most of the damage for Wairarapa College, taking 6-66 while Olly Burt took 3-27.
Wairarapa College also found runs hard to come by and were 110-6 at stumps, Robbie Anderson holding the fort with an unbeaten 48. Bowling for Red Star, Peter Sigvertsen put down 20 overs and has 3-41.
