Flight Centre Lansdowne made no bones about their superiority over arch-rivals Greytown in their Bidwell Cup senior men's interclub one innings match at Greytown on Sunday, winning by seven wickets.
Greytown batted first and apart from the efforts of openers Tim Lucas and Paul Lyttle theirs was a dismal performance as they struggled through to 120.
Lucas was a mixture of patience and aggression in making 68 before being caught off the bowling of Daniel Ingham. He struck eight fours and one six while Lyttle had the two fours in his 21 made from 37 balls. Remarkably, the next highest scorer for Greytown was Glen Jonas, batting at number 10, who just made it into double figures, with the other seven batsmen providing only 10 runs between them.
Not surprisingly, then there were some impressive bowling figures from Lansdowne with medium pacer Ingham, who has been the mainstay of the Wairarapa College side in recent seasons, showing what a welcome acquisition he will be by taking 6-28 from his 12 overs. Spinner Jamie Holmes also had good reason to be well satisfied with his return of 4-31 off 11 overs.
Lansdowne took just 26.3 overs to reach their target of 121. Openers Holmes and Matthew Stringfellow put on 64 for the first wicket before Holmes was caught from the bowling of Jonas for 33. He hit six fours and faced 28 balls.
Stringfellow and Henry Cameron then added a further 41 runs for the second wicket before Cameron was bowled by Seth Rance for 10 with the score at 105 and there were just two runs needed for victory when Stringfellow was caught off the bowling of Nash Patel for 65. He had faced 63 balls and struck 10 fours and one six.
Rance was the pick of the Greytown attack, with 1-20 off 8.3 overs, while Patel took 1-34 off seven overs and Jonas 1-12 off four.
