Eketahuna women's rugby coach Sid Tatana has mixed feelings over the make-up of his side for the Wellington premier division competition, which kicks off on April 2.
Tatana is convinced he has enough talent for Eketahuna to make the same bold showings as they have during the past two years when they have been runners-up for the main championship. But he is also worried a lack of forwards could jeopardise their chances.
"It would be great to have a few more forwards to call on in case of injuries or unavailabilities," Tatana said. Eketahuna have drawn the bye for the first round of their seven-team competition, and will make their first appearance on April 9.
Training sessions are held at the Eketahuna grounds on Tuesday and Thursday nights, starting at 6.30pm, and Tatana said anyone who was keen to try out could do so.
Meanwhile, six of the Eketahuna squad were selected for the 2011 Central Districts Maori women's team: forwards Perri Tatana-Williams, Raylene Reiri and Kathleen Wolland and backs Maia Tua-Davidson, Sharne Waru and Shakira Baker.
However, three of them are likely to make only limited appearances in Wellington competition play with Tatana-Williams taking time out through approaching motherhood and Tua-Davidson and Waru heading to Canada, along with another Eketahuna regular in Kathleen Wilton.
