Former Labour cabinet minister and current MP for Dunedin North, Pete Hodgson, is to retire from politics at the next election.
The announcement opens the way for a spirited contest for one of New Zealand's safest Labour-held seats.
Mr Hodgson, 59, told the Otago Daily Times that it was time for him to move on while he was still young enough to contemplate a post-political life.
"I have mixed feelings. I love my job but it is important to me to leave politics on my own terms."
Mr Hodgson announced the decision to his electorate committee last night.
