Ambitious Labour MP Charles Chauvel issued a statement yesterday welcoming his promotion - only he hasn't been promoted yet.
"That is under consideration," a spokeswoman for Prime Minister Helen Clark said yesterday.
Mr Chauvel issued a statement saying he was "delighted to accept appointment as parliamentary private secretary to Attorney-General Michael Cullen".
But Mr Chauvel, a list MP who replaced Jim Sutton 15 months ago, did not realise that that is not how things are done in Parliament.
Dr Cullen may have offered him a job as PPS - an unpaid assistant - as third best to getting into Cabinet. But the proper course to follow is to wait for an announcement by the PM. One is likely to come next week but Mr Chauvel may be made to wait.
Helen Clark has not appointed a PPS since 2005, but Nanaia Mahuta and David Cunliffe held the posts.
