Labour will consider much harsher penalties for motorists fleeing from police, including possible jail time for first offenders.
Party leader Phil Goff made the reamrks at the Police Association Conference in Wellington today.
On the issue of arming police he said the party wanted more evidence before agreeing to back such a move.
He was challenged on the issue by a Hawke's Bay policeman who said being armed would have made all the difference to fallen constable Len Snee, who was fatally killed by gunman Jan Molenaar last year.
