400 lab workers in Auckland have walked off the job today.
The Medical Laboratory Workers Union says the strike is a bid to get a fair and equitable pay scale for lab scientists, who have four-year degrees.
National secretary Bryan Raill says they earn about 18 per cent less than teachers and nurses, who have a three-year degree.
He says lab workers did not take the strike lightly.
Mr Raill said DHBs had been suspending union members for up to five days to pressure and intimidate them.
